The Next Generation
Hey parents! Are you enjoying this season? Yes, I am talking about Autumn and I am talking about your little ones. As we watch the leaves change and fall in season there is some peace knowing the leaves return the following year. But as your child passes through your life onto their own will he or she return to the values you raised them with? I hope I can give you some peace of mind with this. Most of the research agrees that the greatest impact takes place between the ages of 4 and 14. And this is when you have them! I am not saying it is a 100% guarantee. Great icons such as Gandhi who was devout in his beliefs and was referred to as the role model for generations to come, had his oldest son rebel against everything he believed in. However, I can share personally that I began investing in the character of my children even before the age of four.
Bring it Home
You cannot start too early reading character books, so fix some hot chocolate (no marshmallows or you will lose them! ) and cuddle by the fire with your child. One of my favorite series that taught about character and faith was the Adam Racoon series written by Glen Keane, a Disney animator. I remember one book in the series taught the simple truth that it takes more courage to love than to fight and hate. A book about a bully called Garumph.
I found having a special snack waiting for them after school was the only time that they were going to slow down long enough for me to hear their heart. I would ask questions that were committed to character like how they were being a good friend, what happened at recess or what did they do that was kind.
My husband modeled character in simple ways before our children like taking grocery carts back in to the store from a weary mom or a senior who needed to get in out of the cold, complimenting the winning team or picking up trash (everywhere!)
Today my five children are living a life of moral integrity and I see them investing character in the next generation with my grandchildren. That does not happen by accident. Make the most of this season and know that we are with you! Janis & Susan
